In my first year studying at the San Francisco Art institute, I had a teacher who introduced me to the idea of taking a printed book and transforming it. I connected immediately. Exploring both the personal and public in the form of a discarded book ignited a fury of play and resulted in the body of book work you see here. Most of these books were made between 1989-1995 with a few exceptions made in the past 2 years.
Altered books gave me permission to explore themes in a structure container. Unlike Painting books are hidden until opened making them inherently intimate. The book with its exciting structure and sequence allows many things to happen. I've always enjoyed materials that create layers, textures and tactile feelings. Decisions are made in intuitive responses to what came before. Unfolding itself, as I worked. Like a dream, surprises surface revealing meanings I could never have planned.
