In 2019 I began something I call Artplay. It's the idea that as adults and artists we still need time to play. In fact for me, my health and wellbeing is dependent on having fun making. Over the course of 2020, making for fun had new significance. 2020 was like no other year in history. We will always remember where we were when the pandemic began. What helped you through? For me, it was having ways to express joy and play. Artplay brought light into everyday life.

Figures in e/motion, an exploration of dance figures in abstraction. I am interested in the experiences we hold in the body and how these experiences relate to emotions. The word emotion comes from the latin word movere 'to move through, to stir’.
When we move our bodies in gestures, in rhythms, it feels magical, like a spirit is moving through us. We feel lighter than air, as if gravity is vanquished. Dance has the power to heal, to change us, to move us through. Art too has the power to transmute. Colors, textures and lines hold emotions similar to the way our bodies take form when we move, when we dance. Figures in e/motion explores the play between inside and out, between solidity and transparency, between continuity and impermanence, between emotion and abstraction. Through paint, printmaking and collage, Figures in e/motion futures 12 richly vibrant original artworks. See all 2022 collection images. |
